When You're Buying a Press Against the Clock
If you're reading this, chances are a used Gallus TCS press just surfaced, and you don't have the luxury of a six-week evaluation window. Maybe a client just signed a label contract with a 90-day start date. Maybe your existing press is down and the repair bill is creeping toward replacement territory. Either way, you need to move — carefully.
I've been on the purchasing side of rush equipment acquisitions for over a decade now, mostly for label and packaging shops. I've walked into warehouse showings with a flashlight and a print sample, signed POs at midnight, and once — I'll admit — wired a deposit before I'd actually seen the press run. That last one worked out, barely. This checklist is the version of the process I wish I'd had the first time.
Seven steps. Flat structure. No theory.
Step 1: Lock Your Specs Before You Look at the Press
This is the step people skip because it doesn't feel urgent. It's the most important one.
Before you open a single listing, write down three things on paper: your maximum web width, your minimum print repeat range, and your absolute ceiling on landed cost. Not the asking price — landed cost. More on that in Step 6.
The 2000-era Gallus TCS series came in several configurations, and sellers often list them with vague specs like "10-inch flexo press" without clarifying the actual print stations, die-cutting capability, or whether the UV curing system even works. If you walk into a showing without your non-negotiables written down, you'll talk yourself into compromises because the press is "right there."
Checkpoint: You should be able to say out loud, in one sentence, why this specific press fits your production plan. If you can't, walk away.
Step 2: Read the Service History Like It's an Audit Trail
Ask for the full maintenance log before the showing. If the seller doesn't have one, that's not a red flag — it's a deal-breaker for me personally. Flexo presses at this tier need documented cylinder inspection cycles, anilox roll cleaning records, and web tension calibration history. A machine that's been running three shifts a week for 20 years with no records is a $60,000–$150,000 bet (rough ballpark based on recent used-market listings on pressXchange and Machinio, as of Q4 2024; verify current listings).
What I look for: gaps. Six months of no maintenance activity is not "it just ran fine." It usually means either the press sat idle, or something expensive happened during that window. Ask directly: "What happened between [month] and [month]?"
I'm not a mechanical engineer, so I can't diagnose a worn gearbox by sound. What I can tell you from a buyer's perspective is how to read what the seller's service technician wrote down — or didn't.
Step 3: Insist on a Live Test Print (The Step Most People Skip)
This is the step I overlooked once, and it cost me. I was buying a used flexo unit from a broker who assured me it "ran beautifully last week." I trusted the photos. I trusted the signed condition report. I did not ask for a live run because the press was already partially dismantled for shipping and it felt like too much to ask.
Bottom line: a flexo press that hasn't been test-run in front of you is a mystery box. Insist on a live print with your substrate, if possible. If the seller can't run it — because it's disconnected, missing a plate cylinder, or waiting on a part — that tells you something valuable. It means you're buying as-is with unknown risk. Price it accordingly, or walk.
Checkpoint: You watch it run for at least 15 minutes. You see print quality on all stations. You hear the web move without unusual noise. You get a sample to take home.
Step 4: Check the Wear Points Nobody Mentions in the Listing
Sellers photograph the control panel and the print stations. They rarely photograph the parts that cost real money to replace.
Walk the press and check:
- Anilox rolls — hold a light at an angle. Scoring and wear patterns affect ink laydown directly.
- Plate cylinders and gears — look for pitting, backlash, or uneven gear wear.
- Web tension rollers — spin them by hand. Any grinding or wobble is a repair.
- UV curing lamps — ask for the last bulb replacement date. If they don't know, assume you'll replace them within 90 days.
The upside of catching these early is negotiating leverage. The risk of missing them is a repair bill that can run $8,000–$25,000 depending on what's worn (based on independent service technician quotes we collected in 2023–2024; actual costs vary by region and parts availability). I kept asking myself on one deal: is saving $12,000 on the asking price worth potentially absorbing a $20,000 parts replacement in month two? Eventually the math said no — and I walked.
Step 5: Verify the Ancillary Package (Not Just the Press)
A Gallus TCS press without its supporting equipment is an expensive paperweight. Before you commit, confirm what's actually included:
- Plate mounting system and cylinders
- Anilox roll inventory and sizes
- Die-cutting tooling
- Ink circulation and cleaning systems
- Unwinder/rewinder units
- Spare parts the seller has accumulated
I've seen deals where the seller assumed "all tooling included" meant the press-mounted tooling only, and the buyer assumed it meant the full cabinet of spare cylinders. Put it in writing. Every item, by description and quantity.
Step 6: Calculate the True Landed Cost
This is the math most first-time used-press buyers underestimate. The asking price is maybe 60–70% of what you'll actually spend to get the press into production.
Add up:
- Purchase price
- Rigging and removal from seller's facility
- Transport (oversized load permits, flatbed, crane if needed)
- Rigging and installation at your facility
- Electrical hookup and utilities assessment
- Any immediate repairs or parts identified in Steps 3–5
- Operator training or re-qualification time
On a $75,000 used press, it is not unusual for steps 2–7 to add another $20,000–$35,000 depending on distance and facility readiness. If that pushes past your ceiling from Step 1, the deal is already dead. Don't let sunk-cost thinking change the math.
Step 7: Get Every Promise in Writing Before You Wire
Verbal assurances from a seller — no matter how experienced or well-intentioned — are not worth the oxygen they consume. Every condition, every included item, every "we'll send that part later" needs to be in the purchase agreement.
At minimum, the written agreement should state: exact serial number, equipment list with quantities, known defects, test-print result confirmation, delivery timeline, and whether the sale is as-is or with any warranty. If the seller resists putting something in writing, that's your signal. Trust me on this one.
Common Mistakes (and What They Cost)
Skipping the test print. The single most expensive shortcut. See Step 3.
Assuming "it was working when we disconnected it" equals working now. Machines that sit idle develop their own problems — seals dry out, lubricants settle, electronics fail from disuse. Budget for a commissioning repair.
Not having a formal approval chain for rush purchases. The third time a surprise wire transfer caused friction with our finance team, we finally created a two-signature policy for any equipment purchase above $50,000. Should have done it sooner.
Buying on price alone. The cheapest Gallus TCS press on the market is usually the one with the most undocumented problems. There are exceptions — but they're rare.
Forgetting your own production floor. Can your facility physically fit the press? Do you have the power supply it needs? Does your team have flexo experience, or are you planning to train on a machine you just bought? These aren't small questions, and they're easier to answer before the press shows up than after.
