If you're a label converter or packaging printer looking at a used Gallus TCS press — maybe a 2000 Gallus TCS press for sale that caught your eye — and you're not a master mechanic, this is for you.
I'm a quality manager at a mid-sized label printer. I've been reviewing equipment specs and deliveries for about 5 years now, and I've seen enough deals go sideways to know the difference between "good used" and "someone else's problem." This checklist is what I wish I'd had when I started.
It's 5 steps. Do them in order.
Step 1: Verify the Machine's History (Not Just the Spec Sheet)
Every seller will tell you the press is "well-maintained." That doesn't mean much. What matters is documentation.
Ask for:
- Original purchase invoice and installation date
- Service logs (not just sales receipts — actual service records)
- Count of impressions or total running hours
- Any major component replacements (rollers, bearings, anilox rolls)
Here's something vendors won't tell you: many used presses are sold because the previous owner hit a problem they couldn't fix economically. It's not always a flag, but you want to know what the problem was.
I once looked at a Gallus TCS with pristine photos. When I asked for service logs, the seller said they "didn't keep them that detailed." That wasn't a dealbreaker, but it meant I had to inspect twice as carefully. Turned out the register control unit had been replaced twice — parts, not labor — and the seller couldn't explain why.
Step 2: Inspect the Mechanical Core — Especially the Bearings and Drive System
The Gallus TCS is a robust machine, but it's not new. The bearings and main drive shaft are where problems hide.
Here's what to check:
- Listen for unusual sounds when running at different speeds. Grinding or clicking = bad bearings.
- Check for play in the impression rollers. Grab them and try to wiggle — there should be almost no movement.
- Look at the gearbox for oil leaks. A wet seal isn't the end of the world, but a dry gearbox is.
I should add: if the press has been sitting idle for more than 3 months, seals can dry out and bearings can develop flat spots. Run it for at least 30 minutes before evaluating.

Step 3: Inspect the Web Path and Tension Control
The TCS uses a web tension system that's generally reliable, but it's also where many issues start.
Walk the entire web path:
- Are there worn spots on any rollers or guides?
- Is the dancer arm moving smoothly? Stickiness or jerking = trouble.
- Run a scrap web through and check for wrinkles or misalignment.
I learned this the hard way. In our Q1 2024 quality audit, we rejected a batch of labels where register drift was obvious. The customer didn't catch it at first, but we did. The root cause? A worn tension control roller on a press we'd bought used 6 months earlier. It cost us $22,000 in redo and lost production time.
The seller had dismissed it as "normal wear." Normal wear is not a tension control that's drifting by 0.5mm every 100 meters.
Step 4: Test the Drying and UV Systems (No One Does This)
It's easy to look at the print quality and overlook drying. But on a used press, the drying system can be a nightmare.
Here's what to check:
- Turn on all zones and check each lamp separately (if UV) or each heater zone (if thermal).
- Run a test at full production speed and feel the web after each dryer. It should be dry to touch — not warm, dry.
- Check the exhaust system. If it's blocked or weak, you'll get curing problems and VOC buildup.
I don't have hard data on industry-wide UV lamp failure rates, but based on our 5 years of orders, my sense is that about 15-20% of used presses we've seen had at least one lamp that was significantly degraded. The seller often doesn't know because they only run short test prints.
Step 5: Negotiate With the Right Leverage
Once you've done your inspection, you'll have a clear picture of what needs attention. Use it.
Common negotiation points:
- If the anilox rolls are worn, ask for a price reduction equivalent to replacement cost.
- If the dryer needs a new lamp, get a quote and subtract it.
- If the machine has been idle, factor in a professional service and recalibration.
Small doesn't mean unimportant — it means potential. A Gallus TCS with solid basics and some cosmetic issues is often a better deal than a pristine machine that's been sitting unused for 2 years.
One tip: ask the seller whether they've had any service from a Gallus-authorized technician in the last 12 months. If they have, ask for the report. If they haven't, that's leverage — it means you'll need one.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Three things I see over and over:
- Not running the press at production speed. A slow test print tells you almost nothing about real performance.
- Ignoring the control electronics. The TCS has PLCs and touchscreen interfaces that can be expensive to replace. Check for error codes on startup.
- Skipping the service log. The seller who says "it's been good" without records is taking a risk off their books and putting it on yours.
