My job is to ask the questions that separate a real deal from a repair project.

1. Define which printer problem you are solving
First, make sure the technology matches the job. A Gallus flexo press is designed for label and packaging production. A production 3d printer is a different category of equipment. A seller who will not share the serial number is not the right seller.
I learned this in 2023 after a machine looked clean on paper. The maintenance log had a different serial number than the quote. It took three weeks to resolve. This step is boring, but it is the cheapest protection in the whole process.
3. Turn the year into an operating history
The year printed in a listing is not enough. A 2000 Gallus TCS press that ran one shift with documented maintenance can be a stronger asset than a newer press that ran three shifts with no records.
Ask for:
- Current production hour reading
- Shift history over the last two to three years
- Maintenance logs and major service invoices
- Original configuration sheets or upgrade records
- Seller's reason for selling
When I hear about a 2000 Gallus TCS press for sale, I don't read the year as good or bad. I read it as a question: what has happened since this machine was built? The answer decides whether the price makes sense.
4. Match the configuration to your current work
A TCS listing may be described simply as a flexo press, but you need to confirm the full configuration. Ask for web width, number of print stations, drying or UV system, die-cutting station, lamination station, and unwind/rewind capacity. Do not assume that two TCS presses are the same machine.
A press with the wrong configuration is not a bargain. It is a retrofit project. If the seller cannot answer basic configuration questions, bring in a technician before you make an offer.
5. Watch a cold start
This is the step most people skip. Sales demos usually happen on a warm press. Ask to let the machine sit for 45 to 60 minutes, then start it and run a normal job. Watch registration and ink transfer during the first minutes after startup.
I am glad I insisted on this at one inspection. Warm, the press looked fine. Cold, the first 10 meters were visibly out of register. The seller said it was typical. That bit of information changed our offer and, honestly, probably saved us from a press that would fight us every Monday morning.
6. Run your own substrate and file
Ask to run a test job using your material. Use a file that includes halftone, fine text, registration marks, and solid coverage. Print at production speed, not at a slow demonstration speed. Collect samples from the beginning, middle, and end of the roll.
A seller's sample tells you what the machine can do with their operator's best setup and their preferred material. Your test tells you more about what the machine will do on your floor.
7. Measure color and registration while it runs
Visual inspection can miss tolerance drift. If your customers specify Pantone colors, you should measure color during the test run, then watch it over the length of the roll. Industry commonly uses Delta E below 2 for brand-critical color. Values above 4 become noticeable to many customers. No need to demand perfection. But a press that can't maintain color after warm-up is a real cost.
Check registration by looking at repeating marks with a magnifier. Loose register across a full roll is more expensive than a loose component on paper; it creates scrap.
8. Price the installation and operating costs
The machine price is only one line in the total. Ask for electrical supply requirements, voltage and phase, compressed air connection, floor plan and clearance, rigging and delivery estimate, operator training cost, and a spare parts list with pricing.
A voltage issue or a missing part can wipe out the savings from buying used. The goal is not to find the cheapest possible machine. It is to find the machine with the lowest total cost of getting it ready for your production floor.
9. Put acceptance criteria in writing
Before you issue a purchase order or deposit, define what a successful purchase means. Include the date and location of the test run, the specific material and file to be used, the required production speed, registration and color tolerances, and the payment schedule tied to acceptance.
If the seller will not agree to acceptance criteria in writing, do not assume you will be able to resolve problems after payment. The contract is where the deal gets protected. Everything before that is just conversation.
Two common mistakes
Mistake 1: Treating the seller's sample as proof. A sample shows what the machine did once. It doesn't show how many rejected starts happened before that sample was made. It also doesn't show how the press behaves on your substrate or at your required speed.
Mistake 2: Treating machine price as total cost. A tempting asking price can disappear under rigging, transformer work, spare parts, training, and lost production during installation. Build that full picture before you approve the purchase.
