What a Gallus TCS Press and a Bambu Lab A1 Taught Me About Equipment Buying
Two purchase requests landed on my desk the same week last spring. One was a six-figure capital equipment proposal for a used 2000 Gallus TCS press—the label printing press we'd identified as the right addition to our production line. The other was a Bambu Lab A1 3D printer, priced at a few hundred dollars, requested by our design team for prototyping.
I assumed the bigger purchase would be the complicated one. Turns out both were complicated—just in different ways.
Why We Needed Both
I manage procurement for a label manufacturer with about 90 employees. We print pressure-sensitive labels for food, beverage, and cosmetics brands. Since I took over purchasing in 2020, we've grown from two shifts to three, and our current flexo capacity is maxed out. The owner approved a search for an additional Gallus printing press. Specifically, a used 2000 Gallus TCS press for sale—the workhorse press that lots of label shops already run.
Our production manager pushed for the TCS series specifically. He'd run one at a previous employer, and he put it plainly: parts are available, the print register holds, and operators pick it up fast. For a mid-sized label shop, that counts for a lot.
The 3D printer request was quieter. Our design team kept sending prototype jobs to external shops and paying $200–400 per batch. The frustration wasn't just cost—it was time. External shops often took five to seven business days, which paused whole projects. The designers wanted to iterate in-house: print proof-of-concept label mockups, test die lines, create custom fixtures for quality inspection. I'll be honest—I didn't know much about 3D printers. But the business case made sense, and I've learned to listen when a team says "we could do this faster ourselves."
The Gallus Press Search: Two Quotes That Didn't Match
We found two dealers with a 2000 Gallus TCS press for sale. Both units were advertised as refurbished. Both had been inspected. Both ran print tests. The base quotes, however, told very different stories.
The dealer with the lower base price came in about 14% below the other. That's roughly $40,000 on a press in this class. I remember thinking the search was basically over. My assumption was that the higher quote just had some fat to trim.
Then the lower-quote dealer's rep called me after sending the price. "Just so you know," he said, "that price doesn't include rigging, installation, or commissioning. We can add those services for an additional fee." I asked for a number. He said it depends on the site survey, and he'd get back to me.
The other dealer had sent a full breakdown from day one: press price, crate and transport, on-site rigging, installation, commissioning, operator training for two shifts, and a six-month parts warranty. Not a beautiful document, but nothing missing either.
I assumed "we'll sort out the details later" was normal for used equipment deals. That assumption cost me a month of back-and-forth and nearly cost us a bad purchase.
The Bambu Lab A1 Side Quest
Meanwhile, I was trying to figure out what the design team actually needed from a 3D printer. They wanted to print PLA, PETG, and TPU prototypes quickly. That's exactly the sweet spot for a filament 3D printer like the Bambu Lab A1.
I compared the A1 with a few other filament machines in the same price range. The A1 kept coming up for its reliability, easy slicer software, and consistent print quality. Our engineers also looked at a more expensive enclosed unit, but for the stated use cases, that felt like overkill. The A1 met about 90% of our needs at roughly a fifth of the price.
I asked the design lead to map out where to use a 3D printer in our workflow. She listed five concrete applications: prototype label mockups, die-line test samples for customers, custom QC fixtures for adhesive peel tests, replacement knobs for older equipment, and presentation samples for sales meetings. All of those had either been outsourced or weren't being done at all.
The Moment the Numbers Shifted
Two weeks later, the lower-quote dealer came back with the complete scope. The add-ons were substantial:
- Rigging and millwright services: $18,500
- Installation and commissioning: $27,000
- Crating and export documentation: $6,800
- Refurbishment certification fee: $4,200
- Operator training (two shifts): $17,000
That's nearly $74,000 on top of the base price. When I added it all up, that dealer's "deal" was about 11% more expensive than the dealer with the higher base quote. I took both quotes to our finance manager. She has a phrase she uses when vendors sell on sticker price: "So what's the actual number?" That day, the actual number made the decision obvious.
I've learned to ask what's NOT included before I ask what the price is. That's the single most useful habit I've picked up in years of procurement.
To be fair to the first dealer—they probably weren't trying to be sneaky. That's likely just how they quote used presses: press price first, everything else as an option. But it made comparison nearly impossible, and it's exactly the kind of opacity that erodes trust.
How It Turned Out
We bought from the dealer who gave the itemized breakdown. The Gallus printing press passed its print test, was installed eight weeks later, and as of this writing it's been running three shifts with downtime well within what they promised. Our operators came from older machines and had to adjust to the TCS's controls. The training—two shifts, per the dealer's quote—smoothed that out. By week three, they were running it without help.
The Bambu Lab A1 was a lighter story. It arrived in four days. The design team unboxed it, loaded PLA, and printed a label mockup the same afternoon. Months in, both purchases are earning their keep. The Gallus press handles the long runs that used to bottleneck our older machines. The 3D printer gets used almost daily—for rapid mockups, for a custom fixture that measures shrink sleeve misregistration, and for a bottle model the designers printed for customer demos.
The small purchase was actually the smoother one. Because the pricing was transparent from the start.
The Lesson I Keep Repeating to Vendors
I'm not a printing engineer, so I can't speak to the technical differences in flexo register systems or anilox rolls across press models. What I can tell you from a procurement perspective is this: the lowest quoted price is rarely the lowest total cost.
"The vendor who lists all fees upfront—even when the total looks higher—usually costs less in the end."
Total cost of ownership includes delivery, installation, training, downtime during setup, and the cost of parts and service years later. I'd rather see a higher all-in number on day one than a lower sticker price that turns into a guessing game. That principle applies the same way to a $400,000 press and a $450 3D printer. The scale is different. The math of trust isn't.
If you're evaluating equipment—whether that's a Gallus press, any flexo press, or even something small like a filament 3D printer—ask for the total landed cost in writing. Get the same scope from every vendor, line by line. And if a vendor pushes to "keep the quote simple," that's a red flag.
Don't let the smallness of a purchase lower your standards, either. A Bambu Lab A1 might seem trivial compared to a printing press, but the same question—"does this price include everything?"—applies just the same. I've seen medium-sized companies get burned by vague quotes on spare parts, tooling, even basic shipping.
